About This Story

This story began with a personal writing challenge to myself.

Feeling the desire to write something new and different, I decided to step outside my comfort zone. With the help of my friends from my critique group, I picked a subject I wasn't completely comfortable writing about, with characters I wouldn't ordinarily choose.

Ta Da! *fireworks*

Katana Midnight, an orphaned 16 year old girl, walks into my head, adding one more voice to the already crowded schizophrenic couch. She introduced herself as a reluctant dungeon delver and, on teary days, a summoner of monsoon.

Where I step over the line of cushy suede couches is mainly the setting. I've read very few dystopia or post-apocalyptic novels. To be perfectly honest, I've read very little full fantasy novels. I prefer Urban Fantasy as a general rule. Because of this I don't know anything that might be 'unacceptable' or 'taboo' with more traditional fantasy or dystopian stories.

I also decided to include Lolita fashion and steampunk in my main society. These two things I know little about but I feel are very beautiful movements. In writing this story, I will be researching them so I may do them justice in my writing.

While planning this challenge, I decided I would write a minimum of 1000 words per week for Katana. I feel this allows for a decent size scene. How I'll handle longer scenes, is unclear at this stage. I will handling them on a scene by scene basis.

I will always aim to cut entries at what feels like a logical point (at least to me). Chapters may be more than 1000 words long or more than 1 chapter may be submitted per week, however 1000 words will be the minimum posting for Katana.

While reading these submissions, please keep in mind these are in raw format. The only editing they'll receive before being published is a quick once over for obvious mistakes. They will not be as polished as published novels for a number of different reasons. Anybody who writes novels tell you, writing is rewriting. These submissions are unabridged. For you, Katana is meant only as a little light entertainment.
